Product Review: Beauty Fix Nose Pack from Watson's

Name of product: BeautyFix Nose Pack
Sold at Watson's
Price: 19php

I personally think this product is a waste of money. It's watery. When you apply it on your skin it leaves a lot of holes or empty spaces. It does not really stick well on your skin so when you peel it back, you don't really "harvest" a lot.

When you pull it off, you don't get to "harvest" a lot of blackheads and whiteheads. So, reapplication is needed to get a clean face.

Therefore, save your money and don't buy this product. If you are looking for a similar product, I highly recommend iWhite Nose Pack. It's available at Mercury Drugstores and Robinson's Supermarket.

CAN YOUR CELLPHONE CAUSE ACNE?

Too much exposure to mobile phone heat, not good for the skin.

People use mobile phones every day in more ways than one, unlike before when it was only meant for calls. Instant messaging came and it didn’t take too long for it to have games and other entertainment features such as a music player and a radio. Today, people use it to get information from the internet, while numerous apps have made it possible to do things with just the touch of their fingertips. But among the numerous features a mobile phone has, the camera is probably the most used of them all. From taking pictures and preserving memories to taking selfies and show off.

While mobile phones have given people the power to do things with just a swipe or touch of their fingertips, the constant use of mobile phones, especially those who are relentlessly taking selfies may cause some harmful effects on the skin. The heat coming from mobile phones is known to promote the number of antigens that could cause allergies, especially to those who already a history in having several allergic reactions. Combining this heat to the use of nickel and cobalt in the phone trimmings could also make the skin red and itchy. And with these skin irritation brought by having too much heat exposure from mobile phones, blemishes and acne could breakout on the skin.

Experts also have revealed gruesome details about the collection of dirt, bacteria, and other nastiness that builds up in cellular phone. When mobile phones get in contact to the skin to make a call, the skin is not only in direct contact with the bacteria, but it also starts to perspire and even trap oil in the pores. Worst yet, the pressure of the phone on the skin creates blemishes.

Luckily, America’s #1 acne treatment system, Proactiv Solution has a 3-Step System that is dermatologist-developed and is designed to help clear existing acne and prevent future outbreaks, while gently taking care of the skin. This will also make the skin always ready for a selfie without having to use any filters before posting it online.

Proactiv’s 3-Step System starts with the application of the Renewing Cleanser, which contains Benzoyl Peroxide to help kill acne-causing bacteria. The ultra-fine, micro-crystal BPO penetrates pores fast while being gentle on the skin and tiny exfoliating beads help to unclog the pores of impurities, such as excess sebum, keratin, and dead skin cells. Next is the Proactiv Revitalizing Toner which refines and purifies pores through gentle exfoliation. It contains soothing botanicals to gently remove excess oil for refreshed, clear skin.

And finally, the Repairing Lotion is a treatment that helps to heal breakouts and prevent new ones from forming. Each Proactiv kit comes with a free Refining Mask that helps keep skin clear and acne-free. Formulated with sulfur, a proven acne-fighting ingredient, reaches deep into the pores where blemishes begin. The Refining Mask unclogs pores, pampers inflamed skin, and softens the skin’s texture.

Taking a break from these long heat exposure from mobile phones will definitely improve skin health— trimming down hours of phone calls to a minimum, lessen the amount of time playing games on the phone, and probably just take a few selfies instead of filling the phone’s memory with a lot of it. By using Proactiv to have that blemish free skin, the perfect selfie could just be a click away.

Canyoning or Canyoneering Philippines: 7 Waterfalls at Bangon Falls, Catbalogan City, Samar

MISSION for today should Chasing Potatoes and I choose to take it, is canyoning or canyoneering through seven waterfalls in Bangon, Catbalogan City, Samar.

Canyoning vs. Canyoneering

First off, what is the difference between canyoning or canyoneering? None. The two are synonymous. Both are catch words for a hybrid sport in which participants traverse along a canyon using a variety of techniques including hiking or trekking, swimming, rappelling, bouldering, climbing and bushwacking. Side effects could be broken bones, vertigo, hypothermia, heat stroke and dehydration. This might sound disheartening and scary to some of you but this sounds like a grand adventure for me!

Hiking through Barangay Manguihay, Catbalogan, Samar

Just a few minutes motorcycle ride from the center of Catbalogan City into the fringes of its jungle lies Barangay Manguihay where the popular picnic spot for the townspeople-Bangon Falls is located. While swimming and relaxing in the cool river during hot days or in the weekend is a popular activity for the locals here, our group was looking for more than the usual adrenaline rush!

From Barangay Manguihay, just follow the water pipeline up and it will lead you through the forest.

Along the way you will meet see and interact with locals as they do their activities of daily living. Some men are carrying timber downhill.

There are also salesmen on foot selling various appliances like this man who is selling a stereo/karaoke set. Along the way, you will hear the houses blast Curacha and if you are a true-blue Waray, this brings back memories of fiestas and the urge to dance.

You will also meet a steady stream of men of all ages, sometimes elderly women too, coming to town to bring their organic produce. From root crops to vegetables to upland rice, their baskets are filled with pleasant surprises that's good for the tummy.

Our one hour trek ended at the water treatment facility.

This Catbalogan City's main water source.

Rappelling orientation

We had to strap on our harness and excitedly wait for our descent.

At this point, Sir Joni of Trexplore run through the rappelling drill with us again, making sure that we understood the steps well. We only learned the basics like inserting the rope into the carabiner, locking it, and breaking our descent.

Canyoning over 7 waterfalls

There were seven waterfalls to conquer. The highest, Bangon Falls has a 5-meter drop.

The best part for me is rappelling. There is the thrill of not knowing what lies beyond but you know you are safe and secure.

Jumping off cliffs is my least favorite. I noticed I needed more and more minutes to compose myself with each jump.

Holding hands para sweet!

My knees buckle with every free fall. Juice ko! I think my greatest fear is not knowing the depth and worrying that I'd be caught by the whirlpool. At one point I didn't jump far enough that my heel bone hit a rock.

Some tips when cliff jumping:

  1.  Survey your landing zone. Make sure it is deep enough(4 meters plus) to jump into.
  2.  Make sure the area where you are going to land is clear before you jump to avoid accidents.
  3.  Dive feet first because your face is too important to damage! But seriously, just imagine the water hitting your face, up your nostrils and where else! Ouch!
  4. Relax. Don't panic. Find your perfect timing and confidence. Don't succumb to peer pressure.
  5. Glasses or goggles are not recommended. It will just fly off. If you are wearing contact lenses like I do, keep your eyes closed until you resurface and there is minimal water on your face.
  6. Jump away from the whirlpool! I repeat, jump away from the whirlpool!

Don't go chasing waterfalls...please stick to the rivers...that you are used to...

Going with the flow can bruise your tailbone! So here's a tip for you when you are floating downstream, pull your tailbone up to protect it from jutting rocks. Yes work out those glutes and enjoy the view up above. You'll see the sunlight playingwith the leaves as butterflies, fireflies, and rare species of birds fly by.

The best adventures in Samar, Leyte, and Biliran is not complete without Sir Joni of Trexplore. He makes things safe and possible!

Some tips when you are rappelling:

  1. Survey the area and plan your route.
  2. Don't let go of the rope you use for break. I am right handed so I always have to remind myself to hold on to the rope even when I am panicking.
  3. Find a good foothold. I love crevices because they help keep me stable especially if the wall is mossy and slippery.
  4. If the rapids get you, keep calm, relax, and push yourself up slowly.
  5. Stretch out your legs for stability. It also protects your kneecaps from bumping into sharp edges.
  6. Look down and check your route. Make sure there are no roots jutting out that could snag your rope. Don't step on loose rocks.

Rappel pa more!

Relax in the wading pools but mind the gaps because the current is strong. It can suck you! I needed the guide to pull me out!

Langun-Gobingob Cave, Calbiga, Samar for Three Days and Two Nights DAY 2&3 (Lower Langun Chamber)

PHOTOCREDIT: Chasing Potatoes

DAY 2: Gobingob Cave to Langun Cave

We arrived at our base camp at around 4 am and woke up at around 9am for breakfast and breaking of the camp. That gave us only five hours of sleep before we had to hike to our next base camp which is located at the entrance of Langun Cave. Five hours of sleep and we are all bright and perky for our next four-hour hike!

2. Boulder down the vertical area

With a safety harness tied around our waist, we climbed down this deep and steep crevice. Looking down is enough to make the faint hearted admit defeat but this is also the only way to Langun Cave from Gobingob Cave!

PHOTOCREDIT: Chasing Potatoes
This is how high the drop was and this photo was taken halfway along the descent. We still needed to hike down to access the passage to Langun Cave.

3. Towering forest of stalagmites

PHOTOCREDIT: Chasing Potatoes
These towering stalagmites would dwarf anyone. Sometimes you feel like you are a master of your own world and you can do anything. But there are moments like this where I feel dwarfed by Gods creations. And it makes me realize, I am just a small cog in a huge machine.

4. Giant chandeliers

PHOTOCREDIT: Chasing Potatoes
These are stalactites trying to kiss the ground. It's fun to pass in between them.

3. Mother of All Cave Chambers

The Mother of All Cave Chambers measures 80m wide, 120m high and 3000m long. There are water pools and some areas are muddy from leaks coming from the cave's ceiling. It's interesting to take note of the wavelike patterns on the mud.

This part of the cave is cavernous! It's huge and from the distance you will slowly see the light filtering in from the caves mouth. It is refreshing to see sunlight after almost 48 hours of total darkness.

4. Mountain of Guano

PHOTOCREDIT: Rylle Valdez
What we are standing on is the Mountain of Guano. On rainy days, this can be soft and mushy. If you stand too long in one position, you will sink to your knees. We walked on the sides as it's safer and shallower.

Ask me what it feels like to be in deep shit. I'm almost there. The smell was not bad though. Trust me on this as my sense of smell is so strong. I measure smells from sneezing(mild) to gagging(awful!) but this here did not even elicit a twitching of my nose.

5. Crossing the Meadow

PHOTOCREDIT: Mich Yurro

I love the meadow. It has a beautiful carpet of green moss and there were ferns everywhere. I wish I brought my wig, wings, flower crown, and a beautiful, flowy chiffon dress so I could pretend to be an engkantada (fairy) for a couple of minutes.

I give the Girl Scout award to Ate Michelle because she was prepared for the trip. She brought engkantada props with her! So that is a tip for you there-bring a costume!

There's also a rock that was perfect for bouldering!

"Para kang bouldering, walang safety harness. Kailangan ko pang gumawa ng strategy sa rota patungo sa puso mo. 'Di kita ma reach. Wala akong stable foothold sa 'yo. Nauubos na ang upper body strength ko lalo na ang puso ko." Charooootttt

6. Langun Campsite (12nn)

Insect bats flying out of the cave as night falls. I'm in awe. #langun-gobingob cave #calbiga samar

A video posted by Ge Ann (@gedaleann) on

All bats and birds live at the right side of the cave where the Mountain of Guano is. All snakes live at the left side of the cave where a small stream runs through.

Pagoda me! PHOTO CREDIT: Joni Bonifacio
We had lunch and dinner here. We basically just napped the whole afternoon to re-energize for that night's trek.

6. Bat watching

When we were in Hpa-an, I really wanted to observe the bats as they fly out of the cave. Unfortunately, we did not get to see that.

I am thankful that I get to observe the bats flying pattern this time around. It is very interesting. At 5PM they just flew around the cave's mouth in random formation then slowly formed a circle and at about 6PM they flew off in a straight line!

8. Stargazing

9. Rappel down to Langun Cave (8PM)

To enter Lower Langun Chamber, we had a 3 meters single rope descent. Good footing was needed towards the end as we needed to jump off the rest of the way.

10. Snake Room

Sir Joni calls this part "romancing the rocks". I'd call it NSVD or normal spontaneous vaginal delivery. I felt like I was a newborn baby trying to crawl out of the vaginal canal. I even had to maneuver my shoulders laterally to get out of that small tunnel. Ok, TMI!

11. Langun Water Terraces

PHOTOCREDIT: Chasing Potatoes

It's fun dipping into the cold water pools! We get to clean up our muddy apparel and freshen up.

12. Mad Mud Walk

Most of the paths we went through were muddy so we had a lot of fun getting stuck in the mud. Apparently, the strategy that worked best was to run fast in the mud so you won't sink. Stick to the wall as well as the ground is more tightly packed in that area.

It's tricky climbing up when it's slippery.

And mudslides were the best shortcut ever!

13. Langun Underground River
The river trek was challenging. You can't see how deep it is so there is an innate fear of the unknown. The deepest was probably thigh high deep only. There are areas with rapids but it's not really strong. You would sometimes skip over slippery stones to get to the other side.

13. Waterfall

We dropped by a waterfall but we were standing on top of it. the rapid was strong and the drop was really high.

14. Tunnel

PHOTOCREDIT: Chasing Potatoes

It's similar to the World War tunnels and it reminds me of the tunnel where the train passes through in Go Teik Viaduct, only that this is totally made by nature.

15. Dead End

Take a peek at our back and there is a deep drop to a river.

16.  Back to base camp (12MN)

Dozing off, hoping snakes won't crawl over us while we sleep.

DAY 3: Three Hours Hike

We started looking like this...
But the three hour steep climb on the forest covering the cave was very challenging.

The dense secondary forest is home to different species of fauna and flora. The guides pointed out some moss that grows on the tree bark which glows in the dark.

If you engage in conversation with the local guides, you will learn a lot about the use of the different plants in the forest.

Us three hours after. The struggle is real! We ended up the day with a well-deserved bath at Mainit Spring which is not hot at all! More of this later.
