Saridon is Poison

Just recently I was browsing through the racks at a pharmacy and I was wondering why there was a proliferation of drugs with a generic name that includes caffeine. The last time that I took up pharmacology and had my tour of duty, this was not part of the things I needed to memorize for my revalida.

Here in the Philippines, paracetamol, ibuprofen, mefenamic acid and aspirin are the most common antidote for headaches and pains. Then you pair this with betet, Vick's or White Flower. Whichever floats your boat.

When I saw an article about Saridon written by Janette Toral, I got curious. Turns out Saridon contains 250 mg Paracetamol, 150 mg Propyphenazone and 50 mg Caffeine more specifically Saridon is the most potent headache or migraine reliever around. It claims to rid you of your pain in just 15 minutes!

Propyphenazone is the first substance to be activated. This gives an immediate analgesic effect. The paracetamol prolongs its efficacy while caffeine increases its potency since it is a natural analgesic. Not only is it used as an analgesic, it is also a muscle relaxant and antipyretic.

The original formula for Saridon contained a phenacetin, a carcinogenic or cancer causing substance. A component of this was Propyphenazone. It is an NSAID or a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory  drug like aspirin. So if taken excessively can cause bleeding. Since this is an over the counter drug, only a few people know about this fact. This is also contraindicated for ages 12 years old and below. Paracetamol is also hepatotoxic. This can cause liver damage when used in excess or when paired with alchohol.

There have been documented reports by medical watchdogs of how toxic this drug can be but if you do an online search you will only find diziness, shortness of breath and fainting as one of its side effects. Is there more that we don't know of?

Another controversy that surrounds this drug is its prevalent use in our country despite other nations banning it. If other countries are banning the use of this drug why is the Philippines actively promoting it? It is also interesting to note that this product was initially actively promoted, distributed and sold in Visayas and Mindanao. Why is it not being sold in Luzon? Are we here in the Visayas and Mindanao their guinea pigs? Are they testing us without our knowledge? Where is the morality in all these?

Another issue with this drug is Bayers lack of information and internet presence of this drug, except of course  the negative ones. DOH,BFAD and Bayer has the social responsibility of informing us, the consuming public of the results of clinical trials done on this drug.

What is the government doing about Saridon?

Just imagine all the trouble it will cause if you buy this drug without knowing these facts.  It is just right that this  product from Bayer be banned from the market.

    1. Where are you located? Probably because it is banned and in the Philippines it is actively sold only in the Visayas and Mindanao.

  3. How come this drug passed the approval of BFDA, when they were very strict in implementing the rules of protecting the public against dangerous drug, if indeed is true, they must investigate what's going on in their dept.

  5. glad i came across your post, I was not really an avid pill-user + i have not really tried Saridon yet, but it pays to be knowledgeable of these facts so that i might be able to share with my family + friends, too.

i guess with medicines + drugs, it is best to trust those brands + names you've been using for years, instead of trying out new products that gives false promises or worse contains carcinogen or other harmful ingredients...

  7. First time I've heard of Saridon. I had a severe case of migraine 3 years ago but I only used paracetamol and other OTC pain relievers. This went one for 2 years when I had biogesic for breakfast every single day. I quit because it was already affecting my liver. I tried to lose weight, eat healthy and just like that, the headaches went away.

  8. I suffer PMS every month and sadly it is pre and post. when the pressure at work is too much and I need to report in spite of the head-wacking pain, I do gobble up a pill. But never this Saridon nor I have heard of this. Anyhow, I'll try to check it out with our pharmacy tomorrow if we are selling this drug.

Bayer Phils. should check on this.

  9. I never heard of this drug. This has to be checked by the government. Can this be bought over the counter? If yes, then proper precautions has to be made known to the general public.

  10. Now what is the conclusion of this all?
Maybe it's too late, or I just can't find it, or both....

Anyways, I know somebody who's using it for years and years and is blaming me for it for causing stress. Now I read some things in the paper that comes in those boxes, that it can make people anxious, give hallucinations, insomnia etc.
All the blame goes to me. Could somebody please help me ban this blaming once and for all with compressed straight in the face info?

That would be greatly appreciated :)

Could somebody give me some compressed facts about why taking this shit for over 8 years is not good. And that I can not be blamed for that and that there IS a solution and it's not so hard?
    That would be greatly appreciated.

  13. All drugs have side effects and contraindications. Saridon is a common and effective analgesic and especially effective for headaches. It acts fast, provides quick relief and lasts longer. It is used widely here in India. I have used it for many decades and have yet to be poisoned, the same goes for my family. the wikipedia says that over 80 countries in Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia use it. Why the Americans withdrew its use, I don't know and it really doesn't matter. it works for me.

  14. Saridon is definitely a POISON. I am 25 years old. I have consumed this medicine for 3 years or so. I have good food habits ( no non-veg/ no alcohol/ eat timely) Last year I was diagnosed with Gastric Ulcer. A doctor in Apollo Hospital Hyderabad told me that Saridon is the prime cause of Peptic Ulcer.
